Students who score below the designated performance levels on New York State assessments or who are at risk of not meeting the New York State learning standards:

  • Scored level 1 or Level 2 on New York State ELA and/or Mathematics assessments
  • Did not achieve a passing score on Regent’s exams
  • Recommended by a teacher, administrator or counselor
  • Recommended by a parent

Does my child have to receive AIS?

Yes, because this is a mandated program.  If your child has been identified as a student needing AIS, he/she must participate in the program.

How will the school keep parents informed?

Communication between school and home will be a very important part of the program.

  • An entry letter to parents that briefly explains the student’s needs and program
  • An AIS meeting as part of open-house
  • Progress reports included with school report cards
  • An exit letter to parent that acknowledges the student’s progress

What can parents do to help?

Parent support will certainly add to the success of the program.  Please try to:

  • Be as positive and supportive as possible
  • Encourage your child to do homework, use their planner and study
  • Motivate your child by praising their academic accomplishments
  • Stay in touch with your child’s teachers. Email is a great communication tool.
  • Check teachers’ classroom web pages for assignments, projects and helpful links to resources.

Who can I contact if I still have questions?

Contact your child’s principal or Director of Special Programs, Sandra Young.
