Odessa and Montour Falls are small villages of Schuyler County and are located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of New York State. According to the 2000 Census the village of Odessa has an approximate population of 617; the town of Montour, 2,446; and the village of Montour Falls, 1,797. The total population of Schuyler County is just under 20,000.
Although the communities are small, Seneca Lake, beautiful waterfalls, Watkins Glen International Raceway, many estate wineries, the natural beauty of Schuyler County, and superb recreational facilities draw thousands of tourists to the area every year.
The region offers a variety of recreational opportunities. Boating and sailing are just 10 minutes away. Hunting and fishing are also popular activities. Tennis, golf, cross-country skiing, and ice-skating are just a few more things to do. Downhill skiers can find their way to Greek Peak in about an hour’s time.
There are several local town and state parks.
Watkins Glen International Raceway draws a number of tourists from all over the country. You can expect a race, car show, or some other fun activity going on most every weekend in the summer. The Finger Lakes Wine Festival is also hosted at the track and is a big hit.
The major employers in the area include Schuyler Hospital and Welliver McGuire. Welliver McGuire is one of the top rated construction firms in the U.S. A number of residents commute to other large institutions such as world-known Cornell University in Ithaca and Corning Incorporated in Corning, which are approximately 25 miles away.
