No Child Left Behind

What is NCLB?

     NCLB is the title of the law signed on January 8 2003 by President George W. Bush, re-authorizing Title I (Remedial Services). It is titled No Child Left Behind.

     It addresses:

  1. Helping all students meet high standards
  2. Improving teacher quality
  3. Technology in schools
  4. Language instruction for limited English Proficient and Immigrant students
  5. Safe and Drug Free School and Communities
  6. 21st Century Community Learning Centers
  7. Innovative programs
  8. State assessments
What must schools notify parents of due to the new NCLB regulations?
  1. If their child is in need of placement in a language instruction education program and why. Other information regarding the LEP program.
  2. Parents may request information regarding the professional qualifications of their child's classroom teacher(s) and paraprofessional staff regarding:
    1. whether the teacher has met State qualifications and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction;
    2. whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which state qualification or licensing has been waived;
    3. The baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and any other graduate certification or degree held by the teacher, and the field of discipline of the certification of degree; and
    4. whether the child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications
  3. Information on their child's level of achievement in each of the State Academic assessments.
  4. Notification if their child has been assigned, or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who is not highly qualified.
